Decision Paralysis

I got to thinking last night, as one does, about why lately I don't seem to have accomplished anything meaningful on the two million projects I have going - and the thought process I suddenly realised was so utterly rediculous I have decided to share it here - maybe in some vain hope that will kick me into action, somehow.

So.

$Project requires devices be connected - from my desk, to the attic - via network and video cables.

Ok...

I don't currently have enough networks and coaxes run to enable everything necessary to connect up simultaneously.

OK... Do you have Cat5, coax, and connectors?

Yup.

So why not run some new cables down?

Well, because I want to terminate them nicely in a permanent fashion, on some kind of wall plate or patch panel - not just trail them down from the ceiling like the existing cables!

Excellent answer. So why haven't you done that yet then?

Um... Well I don't have the patch panel for a start...

Order one then!

Well sure - but I haven't decided what sort I want - and I'd need to buy the right sort of connectors to match...

Doesn't sound hard - I'm still not sure what the problem is?

But I'm not sure what exactly I'm going to need? What if I spend lots of money on all the connections and realise I should have done it differently?

Sounds like just trailing cables might be the best job then.

But that means when I get around to wiring it properly, those cables will probably need to be cut & re-terminated! What a waste!

You literally just said you don't know what you need. How will you ever figure it out if you don't prototype the system?

But then, what if I get so used to the messy prototype it just stays that way forever?

Have you ever saw the cable runs in BBC TVC's CCA?

Yes ok, I take your point. Fine! Let's do this!

It's 3am now.

Dear reader:

Please don't ever be me.

Yours sincerely
